What is a ring blower impeller?

The impeller is the spinning disc inside the blower. It has small blades or vanes around its edge. As it turns at high speed, it pulls air in, moves it through a curved channel inside the housing, and pushes it out at higher pressure. This is what gives a ring blower its airflow and pressure, without needing oil or gears like some other types of blowers.

Unlike a fan, the impeller doesn’t touch the sides of the housing. There’s a small gap between the impeller and the casing. This gap matters a lot. Too wide, and the blower loses efficiency. Too narrow, and the impeller can rub against the housing, causing damage.

What are impellers made from?

Most ring blower impellers are made from aluminium alloy. This is because aluminium is light but strong enough to handle the speeds involved, usually somewhere between 3,000 and 3,600 RPM. Some impellers are also made from stainless steel or engineering plastics, depending on what the blower will be used for.

If the blower is being used in a corrosive environment, or with air that has some moisture or chemicals in it, stainless steel is often the better choice. It costs more, but it lasts longer and holds up better against wear.

Signs your impeller might need attention

You don’t need to strip down the whole blower to know if something’s wrong with the impeller. Here are a few things to look out for:

Unusual noise. A grinding or rattling sound often means the impeller is rubbing against the casing.


Reduced airflow or pressure. If your blower isn’t performing like it used to, wear on the impeller blades could be the cause.

Vibration. An impeller that’s slightly bent or unbalanced will cause the whole unit to vibrate more than normal.

Higher power use. If the motor is drawing more current than usual, it might be working harder to push air past a worn or damaged impeller.

Why impeller quality matters

A cheaply made impeller might work fine for a few weeks or months. But over time, poor balancing or low-grade materials lead to problems; more vibration, more noise, and a shorter working life for the whole blower.

A well-made impeller is properly balanced, which means less strain on the motor and bearings. This keeps running costs down and reduces the chances of unplanned downtime. Maintaining your impeller
